Revenue management in consumer markets
May 1st, 2011 | andreas
Last week there has been quite some attention about a book on Amazon that was priced over $23m by third-party vendors. The reasons for this curiosity are that these two vendors use revenue management software that apparently does not perform any sanity checks when revising their prices based on their competitors. Granted, this incident brought the vendors a lot of Internet traffic, but all for the wrong reasons. How difficult would it have been to implement e.g. email alerts when the price of an item exceeds x% of its cost basis? 10 minutes maybe?
What’s also interesting about this is how market crashes like the recent mortgage bubble move from highly advanced markets like wall streets to less developed and standardized areas like consumer markets. This shows that progress in technology; now that we are able to map products to each other (determine product identity between providers) and can perform the scanning of our competitive land scape automatically, we can move into the tricks that have been reserved for stock market and flight markets… but these tricks need to be well executed; as a progressing society we have had only limited experience in using revenue management in consumer markets… there is still lots to be learned.
